Animal charities and Council see startling rise in unwanted dogs

THE number of unwanted and rescued dogs being cared for by Galway County Council has reached unprecedented levels.

The dog pounds operated by and on behalf of the local authority are all full while shelters operated by charities around the county are struggling to cope with the demand.

The Council says the high volume of dogs going into its care at present is putting the Dog Warden services under considerable pressure. Dog wardens are operating waiting lists and spaces are filled as soon as they become available in the council shelters.

It’s thought that the high number of straying and unwanted dogs comes after a surge in dog ownership during the pandemic when more people were at home and wanted a pet to walk...
