No change to Local Property Tax

Increasing LPT ‘not the right thing’ in current climate

HOUSEHOLDERS across County Galway will see their Local Property Tax bills remain unchanged for the coming year, after members of Galway County Council rejected a request to increase the rate by 15 per cent.

The matter was raised at this week’s plenary council meeting, where acting CEO of the council, Jim Cullen recommended the 15 per cent raise in a bid to shore up the council’s cash strapped finances.

He told councillors that in order to maintain services at 2022 levels, over €9m would need to be found for 2023, given the significant cost increases in all areas of activity. This figure includes a minimum projected expenditure of €1.2m in energy costs.

He said a 15 per cent increase would amount to an increase of €13.50 for more than 43 per cent of homes in the county, with a further 29 per cent of homeowners facing an increase of €33.75…
