Education Minister to be quizzed on school

THE long-planned further expansion of Archbishop McHale College in Tuam is to be raised with Minister for Education Norma Foley.

There is currently a waiting list for students who wish to enrol in September as the school hasn’t the space to accommodate more students.

While the first phase of a major transformation of the former vocational school on Dublin Road was completed and occupied in 2018, there hasn’t been any progress regarding the second phase.

This involved the demolition of the existing old school building and the construction of a modern building that would accommodate the school’s growing enrolment numbers.

Phase two was paused in 2018/19 to allow for a further examination of the school needs by the Department of Education and the Galway Roscommon Education and Training Board, which runs the co-ed school. However, it appears that time and space are running out…
