Farming for meat where the three counties meet

Singer and farmer Brendan Shine keeps up to 100 cattle

BRENDAN Shine cuts and bales his own silage.

The Roscommon native has had more hits in the Irish charts than The Beatles (30 vs 27), as Tom Gilmore told us in these pages a few weeks ago, and it’s probably a fairly safe bet to say that navigating a tractor around a field of freshly cut grass in the height of summer is a claim to fame that Paul Mc Cartney doesn’t have.

Brendan lives with his wife Kathleen in Taughmaconnell, nestled between Ballinasloe and Athlone, in an area covered by the Padraig Pearses GAA club. The townlands of Moore and rural Creagh also supply the club with players.

Kathleen used to cut the silage with her husband up until a few years ago, and Brendan, 75 this June, does all his own farming while still being very active on the Country and Western music scene.

Brendan reverted to farming a beef herd of cattle organically in recent times...
