Corofin footballers and Galway camogie among People of the Year

THOSE involved in various causes, including community projects, sport, charity and farming, were honoured at Sunday night’s 2020 Galway People of the Year Awards, which was postponed on a number of occasions previously due to Covid.

The awards recognise those who have done their community and their county proud, brought joy and light to the lives of people, or shown true courage and strength in the face of adversity. All have one thing in common in that they are ordinary people who have worked hard to enrich the lives of others.

There was a strong sporting theme, with awards presented to Kevin O’Brien and Kieran Fitzgerald, representing players and management to celebrate Corofin’s achievement of being the only club to win three All-Ireland club titles in a row.

The success of Galway Camogie was also recognised, with awards to team captain Sarah Dervan, manager Cathal Murray and secretary Ann Kearney.

Galway Bay FM hurling commentator Sean Walsh from Turloughmore was feted for his contribution to the promotion of hurling on local radio, going back to 1989.

Athenry’s Joe Healy, the only man to be elected president of both Macra na Feirme and the IFA, was recognised for his contribution to Irish agriculture.
