New North Galway club gives it stick

Tuam Falcons follow Athenry, Ballinasloe and Loughrea in setting up new hockey club

AN initiative to introduce hockey into four Galway towns has led to clubs being founded in Athenry, Ballinasloe, Loughrea and Tuam over the last number of months.

Up to now, the sport, which has been in Ireland for over a hundred years, has mainly been concentrated on in urban centres, with the likes of Galway City clubs Greenfields and Galway HC flying the flag out west.

However, with the rise of the Ireland women’s team, those involved in the sport want to capitalise on this success by spreading the gospel beyond city limits and, so, are seeking to introduce hockey to children – and, indeed, adults – in rural towns like Tuam, Loughrea, Ballinasloe and Athenry.

In each of those towns, the calls have gone out and, on this particular Sunday morning at Tuam Celtic, Tuam Falcons Hockey Club holds its first taster session on Astro-turf ...
