Sombre day in Dunmore as bank shuts its doors forever

FOR over a century, there has been some form of banking system operating in Dunmore. That was until Friday, October 8, 2021.

The big blue door at the front of the Bank of Ireland branch closed for the final time, never to be reopened. The ATM machine a few steps away will no longer dispense cash to the people living in Dunmore, or those passing through. Another punch to the solar plexus of rural Ireland.

The BOI on Barrack Street was one of 88 to close in Ireland last week, with 15 going in Northern Ireland. BOI owns 82 of these premises, which they are now planning to sell.
