Several injured after fracas at Tuam graveyard

A NUMBER of people have been taken to hospital, some with suspected stab wounds, after a melee at a graveyard in Tuam this afternoon (Wednesday).

Gardai were called to the scene at Athenry Road after fighting broke out between groups after a funeral.

A large number of gardai attended, including members of the armed response unit.

An eye-witness told The Tuam Herald that they had seen people with knives in the graveyard and one person had a saw. Blood droplets were visible on footpaths in the area.

It’s understood the fight is related to an ongoing feud between families in the area in recent months. A number of people who suffered injuries in the fracas were transported to hospital via air ambulance. Their condition is not known.

There has been serious traffic disruption in the town throughout the afternoon with some routes being blocked off.

The disruption has also led to the cancellation of sports events scheduled for the area this evening.

SEVERAL people were transported to hospital in a helicopter.
