Is Athenry ewe the most prolific ever?

AFTER she gave birth to 27 lambs since 2014, all employees at the Teagasc centre in Athenry are querying whether or not they have the most fertile ewe in Ireland on their hands?

Certainly, Teagasc technician Henry Walsh, a man who has bred and farmed tens of thousands of sheep during his 40 years working with the body, believes so.

In her first lambing seven years ago, the nameless Belclare ewe delivered five lambs. Thereafter she continually managed to produce the goods with three lambs in 2017, six in the Spring of 2018, more sextuplets in 2019, two last year and this was followed up by yet another five live lambs just last week.
