Students welcome clarity but say ‘hybrid’ Leaving Cert decision should have been made sooner

LEAVING Cert students throughout north Galway have expressed relief at the announcement that they will have the choice of sitting exam papers or being awarded accredited grades for this year’s State exams.

Education Minister Norma Foley announced last week that the class of 2021 would have the option of sitting State exams in June, subject to public health guidelines, or receiving accredited grades. Students can also opt to do both, with the better grade in each subject being offered as their final result.

The announcement came after intensive talks between the Department of Education and teaching unions, with further details to be clarified regarding Oral and Practical examinations due to take place over the Easter break.

Speaking to The Tuam Herald this week, several students said they were happy to finally have clarity on the matter.
