Galway’s team of tracers — the voices behind the contact calls

THE team of contact tracers at the centre in Galway have handled a colossal increase in Covid-19 calls since the start of the year as the number of positive cases soared after Christmas and New Year.
It’s often a challenging job where the person on the end of the phone can be frightened, very ill, or as has tragically been the case, in the hearse, attending the funeral of a loved one.
Hearing about Christmas nights out, big family get-togethers and even children’s birthday parties can be disheartening, but those charged with making the call aren’t in the business of judging people’s behaviour. They are trying to stop the virus spreading by tracking down as many close contacts as the latest positive case on their list might have had.
The 120-plus people working 12-hour shifts at the Galway Contact Tracing Centre in Ballybrit have told thousands of people the bad news that they’ve tested positive for Covid-19.
However, those who work at the centre are amazingly upbeat and energised by their work.
