New book on Tuam Sugar Factory

A FORMER employee at Tuam Sugar Factory has written a new book to document his memories of a career that spanned over 33 years at the Airglooney plant.
John Cahill, from Church View, will launch No Lasting City on Friday, August 31, at the Corralea Court Hotel in the town.
Former colleagues will join John and his family for the launch of the book that offers a unique social history of Tuam. The book includes poems written by John that capture what life was like in the town throughout the factory’s five decades of providing employment in the west of Ireland.
John, who entered the factory as a fitter/welder apprentice in 1954, was among those who lost their jobs when it closed in 1986. He said while the book hadn’t turned out as he originally thought, he’s very proud of his work and hopes people will enjoy his perspective on a period of Tuam’s history that has many different angles.
