Filming starts on SugarTown as former staff take trip down memory lane

A GROUP of ten former Sugar Factory workers have come together with a local filmmaker to mark the start of a new documentary on the Tuam plant.

Paschal Cassidy, who is based in Ballyglunin, has embarked on the social history documentary in recent weeks, which he has provisionally titled SugarTown.
A callout for former workers to share their memories of the factory led to the ten men and women gathering at the Rustic Vaults last Thursday, where Paschal and fellow cameraman Shane Brennan and sound mixer Steve McLaughlin captured over two hours of footage.
As the group chatted and looked over old staff photos, they remembered how highly Sugar Factory workers were regarded in the town.
“We got paid on a Wednesday and you knew that no matter where you went in Tuam, they would always cash your cheque,” said Bernie Heneghan, who also recalled her daily eight mile cycle in and out to work from Clogherboy.
