Dry summer could see return of water tankers in Ballinasloe area

FEARS have been expressed that households dependent on the Ballinasloe Regional Water Scheme could again see their service cut off if we experience a dry summer this year.

During the recent snow storms water shortages were experienced in many areas served by the scheme. This is being attributed by some to large numbers of households leaving taps running permanently as a prevention against freezing.
The issue was discussed at the March meeting of Ballinasloe Municipal District Council (MDC) where the efforts of Co Council staff, the emergency services and volunteers were praised by the members.
However, MDC Cathaoirleach Aidan Donohue (FG) warned that the scheme was in need of an upgrade as it was now running at 100 per cent capacity and a dry summer could see water restrictions needed again.
