Canning edges Galway closer to the Holy Grail

THIRTY years ago Galway and Tipperary played out an epic All-Ireland semi-final, which Galway won 3-20 to 2-17.

In last Sunday's match-day programme, freelance journalist Christy O'Connor called the 1987 meeting between the counties “the best match played in Croke Park during the 1980sâ€. History repeated itself again on Sunday, August 6, the third year on the trot the counties have left the country spellbound in a semi-final, after a game that will go down as one of the best of this decade.
Like Manchester United and Arsenal in the late 1990s, and Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the Noughties, Galway and Tipperary need one another.
