Marion excels as leader of the ring

TUAM Mart's manager Marion Devane has thrived for 12 years in her role, and has abided by one simple mantra to help her do this.

“You have to be able to get on with people,†said Marion, who this month celebrates her 39th year working in the Tuam Cooperative Livestock Mart.
“I was doing the accounts before I became manager. The biggest change I found when I switched roles I suppose was actually being the boss. You had to make a decision and stick to it, and it's worked well so far.
“The mart is a team effort, it's not just one person. I mean it's like a puzzle, if you've one piece missing, the whole thing isn't going to function right.â€
Marion was appointed to the position in 2005. She was Galway's first female mart manager, and Tuam was one of the few marts in the country back then to have a woman running the show, as was reported by The Tuam Herald's Tom Gilmore in July of that year. To this day, Marion remains one of the few female mart managers in Ireland.
