Archaeologist to monitor renovation of Tuam hospital

PLANNING permission has been granted for the redevelopment of the former Grove Hospital in Tuam into a new mental health and disabilities campus.
However, planners have stipulated that the works must be monitored by an archaeologist following concerns about the potential disruption to a possible babies’ burial site on adjoining lands.

The development, for which €3.5 million has already been allocated, will give a new purpose to the old dilapidated former Bon Secours Hospital in the centre of Tuam. The former Grove building will become a Mental Health Services Facility, Early Intervention and Disability Services Facility.
While the extensive project will involve considerable demolition work, much of the existing hospital structure will remain in situ and be significantly refurbished and renovated.
