Shane aims to be a pilot at 16

A YOUNG Tuam student, Shane Lynch, could be flying a plane by next August.
The native of Brooklawn, Kilconly is only 16 but having just won a €10,0000 scholarship to train as a pilot, he could be in the air this summer.
Shane won the Joseph McHugh Memorial Competition for second level students which is in memory of one of the pioneers of aviation in Ireland in the 1940s who came from Ballinderry, Corofin.
Shane, a Transition Year student at McHale College, Tuam says he was “gobsmacked” to win the grant. His great ambition is to pilot one of the new fleet of Airbus 835 planes with Aer Lingus.
Shane’s scholarship means he will train in all aspects of flying, practical and theoretical, at the National Flying Centre, Weston Airport, Dublin from June to August this summer. By the end of the course he should be qualified to fly, according to his teacher, Louise Flaherty.
