Galway opens its Decade of Commemoration in style

WITH a whoosh, the long black curtain fell to unveil what is probably the largest copy ever made of the Proclamation of Independence. All five metres by three of it will hang in the lobby of County Buildings for the duration of the year of commemoration of 1916.
Apart from the event at Dublin Castle on New Year’s Day, Galway County Council’s was the only official ceremony in the country to mark the start of the centenary year of 1916.
The unveiling by Cathaoirleach Peter Roche and CEO Kevin Kelly took place before a capacity attendance that included representatives from the two places in the county most closely connected with the signatories of the Proclamation.
These are Rosmuc, beloved of Patrick Pearse where he had his cottage, and Ballymoe, birthplace of Eamonn Ceannt.
