Athenry goes latin with the rise of a new samba band

ATHENRY may be more famous for the popular ditty about its fields, but the town’s musical culture is heading in a different direction with the launch of the town’s first samba band.
A group of enthusiastic locals have taken up samba drumming classes over the past couple of months and they’re beating a path to becoming the town’s newest artistic sensation.
John Tierney, owner of the Rhythm Drum School in Lisheenkyle, has been offering the samba classes since April and already is attracting a committed group of musicians, none of whom have any previous drumming experience.
