Can galway halt mayos drive for five in connacht

WHEN the Connacht Senior Football Championship draw was made in Croke Park last October and the fixtures set in stone, June 14 was always date ringed in red. There’s always something special about the Galway and Mayo rivalry and Galway GAA officials estimate an attendance over 20,000 at next Sunday’s semi-final at Pearse Stadium (throw-in 4 o’clock).
The Tribesmen still had to take care of business in New York and Leitrim and while they’ve done just that, albeit unconvincingly, this represents the acid test for the county’s progress under manager Kevin Walsh this season.
The odds may be tighter than when the sides met in each of the past two years but Mayo are justifiable favourites on the back of their Division 1 status as well as a consistent assault on the All-Ireland under James Horan’s watch.
