Garda helicopter may help fight gorse fires

The Garda helicopter may be called in to try and apprehend those starting gorse fires around Galway and to assist fire fighters with the early detection of these blazes. Director of Services with Galway Co Council Peter Gavican says the calls to fire fighters in the past week have “gone from an average of four or five a day to up to 13 or 14”.
The council official’s comments come in the wake of a spate of gorse fires over the past few days, including one inferno which Tuam fire fighters fought for over six hours on Sunday evening and resulted in road closures between Belclare and Sylane.
