A hurley maker in football heartland

After the downturn in the building industry in 2008, carpenter Ronan Higgins turned to his love of hurling for an alternative career and started a hurley making business in the heart of the All-Ireland winning club football parish of Corofin.
Today Ronan’s hurleys are used by players in many of the top clubs in Galway and one was used by the winner of an All-Ireland Poc Fada championship. Some of the camáns made at Higgins Hurleys have even been used by players as far away as Australia, New Zealand and the USA.
“Things were going downhill in the carpentry business and I decided to do something different rather than sitting at home on the couch.
“I was, and still am, playing with Sylane and that gave me the interest in picking up a nice hurley and knowing what suited my style. So I wasn’t coming into this business blind, as there are different hurleys to suit different players,” says Ronan.
