New greenfield site only solution for annaghdown

PLANS to extend Annaghdown’s cemetery have been ruled out, with the only solution to a lack of burial space in the parish being a greenfield site, the local community have been told.
A public meeting was held last week to discuss ways of resolving the burial space crisis where it was revealed that restrictions imposed by the National Monuments Service had ruled out any extension, due to a line of archaeological significance being drawn around the existing graveyard.
Local independent councillor James Charity, who is a member of Annaghdown Cemetery Committee, branded the measures as ridiculous and said it was indicative of a lack of forward thinking by Galway County Council.
