The late Pat Egan

Death of pat egan a major figure in galway gaa history

THE G.A.A. at local and national levels, and among many Irish people living abroad who have retained their love of Gaelic games, are mourning the death of Pat Egan, former Chairman of Galway Football Board and, in more recent years, Galway’s delegate to the Central Council of the G.A.A.
Pat, aged 73, died peacefully at his residence in Rusheens, in the parish of Corofin, at noon last Thursday; the burial of his mortal remains took place on Sunday at Kilmoylan Cemetery after Requiem Mass at the Sacred Heart Church, Belclare. The chief celebrant was Canon Martin Gleeson, assisted by Fr Michael Nohilly, SMA, and Fr Pat Donnellan, PP Islandeady, Co. Mayo.
On Saturday, the body of the deceased lay in repose at St Colman’s Room, adjoining St Colman’s Church, Corofin and on both days there was a very large and representative gathering, which was of great solace to the Egan family.
Pat’s death, after a long illness bravely borne, is heart-breaking for his wife Nora, sons Ulick and Noel, daughter Ann-Marie, sisters Noreen, Eileen, Bernadette and Bridie, daughter-in-law Assumpta, grand-children Ellie, Patrick and Ava; relatives, extended family, neighbours and a wide circle of friends at home and abroad.
Very sadly, Pat was predeceased by his brothers Frank, at the age of 43, and Ger, at the age of 33; and their sister Teresa who died in 2011.
On the day of the 2013 County Senior and Minor Football Championship finals at Tuam Stadium, Pat Egan proudly accepted the Galway Football Committee’s distinguished service award from the County Football Chairman, Tadhg ” Congaile. It was a formal Thank You to one of the most influential figures in the growth, development and many successes of Galway football over the past three decades and the man himself was delighted to follow in the footsteps of all those who were similarly honoured on the showpiece occasion of Galway club football since the 'Personality of the Past’ awards initiative was introduced in 1985.
