BOUNCING straight back to senior football has proved a task beyond relegated teams in recent years but Moycullen’s drive to buck that trend and secure a swift return to the top table of Galway football remains alive after a fully merited win over Athenry in the first of Sunday’s Intermediate Championship semi-finals at Tuam Stadium.
Four points separated the sides and although Moycullen had to weather an Athenry rally midway through the second half, the final margin still fell some way short of reflecting the winners’ overall dominance.
Moycullen’s season unravelled badly in 2013, a dispiriting relegation final defeat by Barna resulting in the dreaded drop, but they’ve regrouped under former Corofin player and mentor Michael Donnellan. Losing to Athenry was a setback in the opening round before wins over Williamstown, Dunmore MacHales and Headford built momentum ahead of Sunday’s 'revenge’ against Athenry.
