Allireland semifinal heartbreak for galway ladies football team

By Noel Carney

THE WAIT for Galway’s second All-Ireland Ladies Senior Football title goes on.
They put in a tremendous effort in this TG4-sponsored semi-final at Cusack Park, Mullingar last Saturday afternoon but they came up short against a very strong Dublin team who got goals at crucial times.
It was a third successive defeat at this stage of the competition for Galway and possibly their most painful to take as they are a very talented team who matched the winners in most departments.
But Dublin always looked dangerous when they had possession and were probably the better all-round unit, especially in the second half when they wore down a gallant Galway side.
The Galway girls played superb football in the first half and even though they were facing into a strong wind they looked like going in at the break with a 0-8 to 0-7 lead after Barbara Hannon kicked two super points in as many minutes, but Dublin somehow managed to snatch three points in quick succession at the other end to turn it around and lead by two.
That was a huge boost for Dublin and a disappointing end to the first half for Kevin Reidy’s Galway team.
And when the opening score of the second half turned out to be a Dublin goal, it left the Connacht champions with a mountain to climb.
