Empty or abandoned properties could land owners with 7230 bill next monday

THAT old house on the land could cost you over €7,000 next Monday morning. The Revenue Commissioners have confirmed to a member of Galway Co Council that property owners liable for “holiday home tax” must also pay the newer property tax on these dwellings as well — and bills and charges will be backdated.
Corrandulla-based Independent Cllr James Charity told The Tuam Herald on Tuesday that he is inundated with queries from constituents worried about their tax liabilities and wondering what they should do.
One individual he dealt with was so worried that he is considering taking a bulldozer to a property which is in his name but is not being used.
“There is huge confusion. It had been assumed that those paying the Non-Principal Private Residence (NPPR) – the so-called holiday home tax — were not liable for the newer Local Property Tax (LPT) but just this week Revenue has confirmed to me that this is not the case. Such properties are liable for both taxes.”
