Four elected on first count in Tuam

FOUR councillors have been raised shoulder high having been elected in the Tuam municipal district after the first count.
There were huge crowds of excited supporters anxiously awaiting the result and the announcement gave way to deafening cheers of delight.
Topping the poll once again was Independent Sean Canney with 3171 votes. Glinsk's Michael Fitzmaurice, another independent who has gathered huge support took 2621 first preferences.
There was never any doubt about Fine Gael's Pete Roche's return to the council and he has been elected on 2708 and another long term councillor FF Mary Hoade has also been elected on 1886.
The celebrations have already begun for at least four candidates' camps but there are some nail-biting times ahead for others still hoping to be in the race. Canney's surplus will now be distributed.
