Corofin U-21 footballers’ North Board five-in-a-row

Corofin 4-8

Mountbellew-Moylough 0-11

THE U-21 grade has been a happy hunting ground for Corofin in recent years and on Saturday evening at Tuam Stadium the club’s latest crop overcame Mountbellew-Moylough to complete a five-in-a-row of North Board A titles.

Ever since Annaghdown pipped them with a late, late goal in the 2009 North Board decider, the Pa Burke Memorial Cup has almost taken up permanent residence in Corofin.

They lined out with two-thirds of the team that started last November’s U-21 County final win over Salthill-Knocknacarra and although Mountbellew-Moylough were in contention up to the three-quarter mark of this match, Corofin’s ability to create and convert goal chances proved the difference.

Mountbellew-Moylough won by five points when the teams met in February and went on to back up that form with a convincing semi-final win over Claregalway recently. Corofin regrouped through the ‘back door’, they got key players back and returned to winning ways, running up double-digit winning margins against Tuam Stars, Annaghdown and Dunmore MacHales.

They were undoubtedly the two standout teams in the North Board this year with plenty of promising talent on board.
