Tuam celebrates last People of the Year awards

A HISTORIC night was celebrated this week in Tuam’s Town Hall when the last ever People of the Year awards were bestowed on three local recipients.

Mayor of Tuam Cllr Imelda Kelly presided over the ceremony where Ann Coen was presented with the Tuam Person of the Year 2014 award, in recognition of her work with the annual Tuam TradFest music festival.

The Young Person of the Year award went to Simon Tierney, who has been working over the past 18 months to hold a special sporting memorabilia auction to raise funds for his injured friend Shane Grogan, while the last ever group to hold aloft the Group of the Year award is the newly formed Tuam’s Men’s Shed.

Addressing a large crowd including members of Tuam Town Council, Galway County Council and the recipients’ friends and families, Cllr Kelly said the night was tinged with sadness, given the imminent demise of local representation for the town.
