Glen men’s mini-house fetches €1,000 for charity

By TOM GILMORE A REPLICA traditional Irish cottage made by members of the Glenamaddy Menâ€â„¢s Shed group raised over €1,000 for the Pieta House charity at the weekend. â€Å“We got the idea to make the replica cottage about six weeks ago and we worked on it for two or three hours every Wednesday night since then,â€Â says group co-ordinator John Reilly. Some of the men sold raffle tickets for the cottage in Knock over the weekend, and all proceeds went to the charity. The group meet every Wednesday at 8.30 pm at Glenamaddy Community Development Company (GCDC). Janette Slattery, manager of GCDC says the project was initiated by GCDC at the start of 2012 and has been driven forward on the ground by John Reilly and the group themselves. â€Å“Other recent projects include vegetable gardening last summer, ran by local horticulturists John Niland, and nativity cribs made at Christmas, an idea that came from John Reilly. â€Å“The group have been lucky to have recently secured some funding and will hopefully be moving forward with a furniture restoration course later in the year,â€Â she added. John Reilly says it is their aim to start the furniture restoration course in September, as it would be an interesting project during the winter nights. A number of menâ€â„¢s shed projects are taking place at different locations around the county and the scheme can be organised by any community-based, non-commercial organisation which is open to all men, and provides a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where men cangather and/or work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time, and in the company of other men. Those interested in the menâ€â„¢s shed project in Glenamaddy can contact GCDC on 094-9659570.
