Tuam's UK soccer hero enjoys some down time at home

IT’S a beautiful summer’s afternoon in Tuam and just five days on from securing promotion to English League One with Bristol Rovers, Rory Gaffney is back in his home town and reflecting on an incredible end of season run that culminated in the Gasheads’ 2-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
Lee Brown’s match-winner with almost the final kick of the season sparked pandemonium at the Memorial Stadium as Rovers pipped Accrington Stanley to a place in the third tier of English football. It was a game Bristol Rovers dominated and peppered their opponents’ goal but were unable to find the all-important second until the dying seconds.
“In additional time I kept replaying the header that I missed in the first half,” admitted Gaffney. “I was thinking 'I hope this is not the reason we don’t win the game’. Then I found out after the game that we had 35 or 36 shots on target, so it probably wouldn’t have just my chance being the reason we didn’t win.
