Bellew points the way for pdraig pearses

FAVOURITISM counted for absolutely nothing in the opening round of the Galway Senior Hurling Championship and one of the weekend’s bigger upsets came at Duggan Park on Saturday evening when Pádraig Pearses were full value for their four-point win over Clarinbridge.
Tomás Flannery’s scything run and clinically taken goal in first half added time was the game’s pivotal moment with nine points from the stick of wing-forward Ronan Bellew also key to helping the Gurteen-Ballymacward outfit off to a flying start in Group B.
Already, this defeat puts Clarinbridge on the back foot and Liam Donoghue’s men now have little margin for error in their remaining four matches. Gort and Ardrahan, who played out a draw on Sunday evening, remain most people’s favourites to emerge from the six-team group that also includes Athenry and Kiltormer.
