Valeo joins with NUIG to push research into self-driving cars

CUTTING edge research into self-driving cars is being carried out by a partnership between Valeo in Tuam and NUI Galway.

The partnership was announced today (Wednesday) when it was disclosed that a semi-autonomous (almost self-driving) car will navigate its way around the NUIG campus.
However, students need not fear being run down by a robot: the car will at all times be under human control.
Despite all the hype at present, we are still a long way from completely autonomous cars.
One of the academics involved in the research, Dr Edward Jones, commented that “In many ways perception of the current state of autonomous vehicle technology is more advanced than reality.
“While autonomous vehicles are currently operating successfully in several locations, particularly in the US, this is often under road landscape and weather conditions very different from the more complex city and rural environments that would commonly be found in locations such as Ireland or elsewhere in Europe.”
