St Jarlath’s TY student volunteers to help children in Camodia

ST JARLATH’S COLLEGE student Arron Molloy wanted to do “something meaningful” as part of his Transition Year work experience, and in going to Cambodia to volunteer he has found that niche.

The Menlough native flies off to the Southeast Asian country, which borders Thailand and Vietnam, on January 14 and is there until January 27, volunteering in a care centre looking after underprivileged children in the Camodian capital of Phnom Penh.
Getting to his destination is no easy task. Arron will have to fly to Abu Dhabi, and wait there for up to 24 hours until his next flight, which will bring him to Phnom Penh.
Cambodia is one of the least developed countries in Asia, with one-third of the population living on less than one dollar a day, and while there, Arron will do some practical work in the local community, but the main bulk of his stay will be taken up helping out with the local children.
“The children that will be in the care centre, their mothers will be leaving them in for the day because they’re working long hours in their jobs,” said Arron Molloy, a keen Gaelic footballer with his club and school.
“What I’d be doing really is teaching them English through games and stuff like that. When I was looking for work experience online before Transition Year started I saw the opportunity to go to Cambodia on Projects Abroad.
