Vote on greenway study put on hold

A FEASIBILITY study into the possibility of locating a greenway on the disused railway line between Tuam and Athenry won't be carried out in the near future.

Galway Co Cllrs have decided to postpone voting on the issue until an independent review commissioned by the current  government of the Western Rail Corridor is complete. The independent economic study on the railway line between Athenry and Claremorris was agreed last year as part of the negotiations to form a new government.

This afternoon's decision is a major disappointment for those who have been campaigning for a greenway in the area.

Ind Cllr Shaun Cunniffe proposed a motion at today's meeting of Galway Co Council asking councillors to seek state funding for a feasibility study. However, an amendment was proposed by Ind Cllr Billy Connelly asking for the vote to be put on hold until a review of the railway line is complete.

Cllr Connelly's amendment to the motion was carried 24 votes in favour to 15 against.
