Anglers' unrest

ANGLERS are outraged at a move to change a policy that could threaten the stock of wild brown trout in Lough Corrib.

There is concern that the growing number of pike in the lake and a move by the Inland Fisheries Ireland to stop culling them could threaten the future of the trout stock.
Lough Corrib is one of just 12 lakes in Ireland designated by the Inland Fisheries Ireland as a wild brown trout fishery, making it the premier fishery for that fish species in Europe.
Ignatius Egan, Chairman of the Angling Club in Headford, explains that for decades the national authority IFI had culled pike, a species which attracts mostly British anglers, but that there's a move to change this policy.
“It is a serious concern for us and the Lough Corrib Trout Angling Federation as the wild brown trout are indigenous and the pike are predators.
