'Encouraging response' to Tuam's search for deacons

OVER 20 men have expressed an interest in the newly launched Permanent Deaconate programme in the Tuam Archdiocese, which will support the dwindling number of priests.

Both married and single men have contacted the Director of the Permanent Deaconate, Fr Stephen Farragher, PP in Ballyhaunis, since the programme was announced last March.
Single applicants must sign up to a life of celibacy while those who are married will not be allowed re-marry if their spouse predeceases them.
The decision on who will proceed to the programme will rest with an interview board.
“While I have met with all the applicants I now have to meet with the wives to ensure they are fully understanding and supportive of what the permanent deaconate entails,' said Fr Farragher.
