Men get a health check in Athenry

THE Athenry Primary Care Team held a men's health evening recently and more than 75 men attended. The focus of the evening was to increase men's awareness of health issues and provide information on lifestyle changes that could be made to help prevent ill health. At the event, health professionals from the Primary Care Team including GPs, a physiotherapist, an occupational therapist, practice nurses, public health nurses and community mental health nurses were available for consultation. Free health screening was offered to men who attended and included blood pressure checks, blood sugar checks and BMI calculations. An inhaler workshop with an inhaler nurse specialist was available to review inhaler use. Information leaflets concerning stroke, cardiovascular health, mental health, healthy eating, being active, reducing cancer risk and smoking cessation were distributed. Information talks were given on cholesterol and heart health, prostate health, mental health and diet. Paul Gillen, Health Promotion Officer, HSE West spoke on the importance of physical activity and exercise. Attendees reported that the evening was very informative, practical and encouraged positive changes that could be incorporated into their everyday lives. It is hoped to build on the success of this event and hold a similar event in the future.
