EAL teachers will meet in Cork and Limerick

THE English Language Support Teachers' Association (ELSTA) begins the New Year by hosting seminars in Cork and Limerick. This first venture outside Dublin will deliver training to teachers working with immigrant parents. [private] In reaction to the very positive response from attendees at the Dublin seminar in November, the Globe All-Ireland Programme for Immigrant Parents, through ELSTA, will offer teachers ideas which can lead to inclusive schools by helping them to engage with immigrant parents in a non-judgemental way. The day will begin at 9 am and end at 16.15 and will be delivered by Dr Alvina Grosu who as an immigrant herself realises the potential in cultural mediation, a topic which will be dealt on the day. She says 'In my own country I was used to only talking to people when I specifically wanted something from them. But now I see the value of just getting to know other people socially, and building up personal relationships.' Over the course of the day, participants will consider factors which impact on cultural competence, be taken through some activities from The Globe Toolkit for practitioners working with immigrant parents, and have the opportunity to network with others teachers engaged in similar work. The seminar takes place in Cork Education Support Centre on Saturday February 4, and in Limerick Education Centre on Saturday March 24. Places are limited so it is essential to register in advance; please contact by email lorrainedowney@elsta.ie. Fees: €10 members/students/concessions; €20 non-members; special offer €35 for ELSTA membership and seminar; payment can be made on the day. [/private]
