Festive trek to raise funds for Pieta House West
By JACQUELINE HOGGE THE picturesque landscape of Killary is the destination for a group of Tuam walkers hoping to raise vital funds for Pieta House with a sponsored trek through Connemara. The walk is being co-ordinated by local auctioneer John Joyce, a seasoned hiker, and Colm Farrell who walked around Ireland earlier this year raising funds for and awareness of the charity that assists people with suicidal tendencies and those who self harm. [private] Up to 100 people are expected to take part in the event that will begin at Eoin's Bridge near Leenane on Friday, December 30 at 10.30 am. Old Famine Route The three and a half hour route, along the Fjord, is known as the Old Famine Route and involves mainly flat terrain, suitable for everyone. 'For anyone who overindulges on the turkey this Christmas, our walk is the perfect way to get out in the fresh air and walk it off,' said John. 'We're organising transport from Tuam but for anyone wishing to drive parking will be available. 'It's a beautiful walk with some pretty stunning scenery along the fjord with the mountains in the background so anyone thinking of joining us should certainly bring their camera with them. 'Other essential kit for those planning on taking part include strong walking boots, warm clothing, wet gear, cap, gloves, and a change of clothes for when they finish the walk. 'People should also bring plenty of food and drinks  to sustain them during the walk, although it's not particularly difficult as it's mostly a flat route,' added John. 'Don't forget sunglasses and possibly a walking pole or stick, just in case people find they need either.' Sponsorship cards are available for those taking part and the organisers are hoping the public will continue to support the charity as efforts to bring a Pieta House to Tuam intensify. 'We're grateful for everything we get as we are all too aware that times are tough out there,' added John. Meanwhile, a public meeting is to be held this (Wednesday) evening in the Corralea Court Hotel at 8 pm to discuss plans to establish a Pieta House in the town. Pieta House founder Joan Freeman will attend and answer questions from the public regarding the plans, as will local businessman John Concannon who has been spearheading the initiative in recent months. [/private]
