Vaccinations start as case numbers soar

STAFF at University Hospital Galway (UHG) were the first people in Co Galway to be given the Covid-19 vaccine this week as the HSE gets ready to roll out the vaccine to over 40 nursing homes and residential care facilities across the city and county in January.
By the end of the week, 500 staff will have been vaccinated at the acute public hospital. Those who provide direct care to confirmed or suspected coronavirus cases, including the ICU and Emergency Department, will be prioritised and the plan is to provide the vaccine to all staff from next week onwards.
Numbers of positive coronavirus cases have soared in Galway with an extra 370 cases in the past two weeks and there has been a big increase in referrals from GPs for testing.
