Sonya Blake and Kelly O'Neill painted the backdrop for the new Crib.

Mercy girls paint new Crib

PART of the traditional Christmas experience will be missing this year in Tuam.
Because the Cathedral is closed while the restoration works continue, it will not be possible to visit the large crib, a magnet for children of all ages and their parents.
A beautiful substitute this year will be a smaller Crib in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel, formerly the Mercy Convent Church.
Two Mercy Secondary School students have painted the background scene for this year’s Crib.
The scene was painted by Sonya Blake, Second Year and Kelly O’Neill Fifth Year, under the direction of their Art teacher, Lisa Browne.
The painting features the night sky over the Holy Land and at its centre is the Star of Bethlehem.
Each year a family from the Parish is entrusted with the honour of placing the baby Jesus in the Crib as part of one of the Christmas Eve Masses.  The Archbishop then blesses the nativity scene.
The Blessed Sacrament Chapel will be open each day over the Christmas season and people are welcome to come in and visit the Crib and view the students’ artwork.
