Shock and anger at refusal for Athenry Lidl plans

A GROUP representing local businesses in Athenry are said to be “shocked and angry” by Galway County Council’s decision to refuse planning permission for a multi-million euro retail and housing development for the town centre.
Last Thursday, county planners made known their refusal to give the go-ahead for the development, which would incorporate a LIDL discount supermarket, seven retail units, a crèche and a total of 92 housing units to be located on the 17-acre site where the protected Athenry House structure, which is currently lying derelict, is situated.
In a 114-page report, signed off by a senior executive planner for Galway Co Co, there are nine reasons outlined for refusing the application which was put forward by Ghost Zapper Ltd, who are understood to be owned by well-known billionaire property developers, the Comer brothers.
