Minister to open new wastewater plant in Athenry

MINISTER Eoghan Murphy will visit Athenry this coming Monday to officially open the town’s new wastewater treatment plant.
The works represent a €5 million investment by Irish Water and will ensure that wastewater arising from Athenry is treated and discharged in compliance with urban treatment regulations.
The upgrade to sewerage facilities is also crucial in terms of facilitating a connection to the public system for existing housing estates in the district, eliminating the need for the small plants which have been serving them to date.
Minister Ciaran Cannon says the project will ensure that the capacity of the plant will increase to support a population equivalent of 9,500, with its completion also of major benefit to local commercial development.
“I have actively campaigned for this infrastructural development for Athenry and I was delighted to have turned the first sod on the project in November, 2017. This is a major milestone in the development of Athenry as a location for investment,” he said.
