Galway bears the brunt of Storm Ali

MET Eireann says Galway has been impacted the worst by Storm Ali. Many roads around the county are closed due to fallen trees and hundreds of homes are without power.

An orange wind warning is in place throughout the west and motorists are being warned to take extreme caution this morning and only travel if necessary.
Crews from the ESB and Galway Co Council have been dispatched to areas where power lines are down, and teams are trying to remove fallen trees that are blocking many roads.
The Council says that trees are down between Corrandulla and Loughgeorge and the route is dangerous to travel.

The road is closed between Lackagh and Cregmore NS and the Athenry Road from Tuam, between Tuam and Barnaderg is closed due to a large tree blocking the route.
A tree is also blocking the road between Menlough and Monivea with a similar situation in Kilbannon on the main Tuam to Ballinrobe road.
Gusts of up to 130 km/h have been battering the Galway and Mayo coastlines since early this morning and Galway appears to be the worst area affected by Storm Ali.
The public are urged to be vigilant as the high winds have thrown a lot of debris on to roads and other items such as trampolines, bins and signs are reported to be flying about as a result of the storm.

The ESB says it is prioritising dangerous situations and emergencies and ask the public to only call them to report an emergency on 1850 372999. It warns people not to touch or go near damaged lines.

Meanwhile it has been confirmed that a woman in her 50s, thought to be a tourist, has died after the caravan she was in was blown off a cliff in the Claddaghduff area early this morning.
