Galway kickboxers aim for knockouts

By David Connors

TWO North Galway kickboxers are this Saturday fighting on the undercard of IKF Atomweight World K-1 title bout between Whitney Shepherd from Knocknacarra and German champion Evelyn Gallegos.
Current Irish Super Cruiserweight champion Thomas Scarry from Moylough will be facing off against Bordeaux’s Gerald Breleur, a former French champion in the night’s tenth fight.
Thomas (37) who works in Penn Engineer in Galway City has been kickboxing for five years after initially testing his mettle at white collar boxing before joining the Galway Black Dragon Kickboxing gym where he began working with trainer Pete Foley.
Speaking ahead of the fight he said he’s looking for to the contest “big time” and hopes the bout will stand to him ahead of competing in the Unified World Championships this coming September.
Alex Fitzpatrick is another fighting on this card as he takes on Evan McCann from the Dublin Elite club for the Irish title at 69.5kg weight category.
Sixteen-year-old Alex who hails from Monumentpark, Cortoonrue, Tuam, began kickboxing eleven years ago and is now aiming for a second Irish belt after winning at the 64.5kg category back in last September.
He was forced to vacate the previous title given an adolescent growth spurt that stopped him making this weight grade.
A total of 15 fights will take place in the Clayton Hotel with 12 of these involving members of the Galway Black Dragon gym.
Doors open at 6pm with the first flight scheduled for 7pm.
