Xmas tree shortage, but not just yet

THE biggest Christmas tree grower in Galway estimates that the recent drought cost him the loss of between 30 to 50 per cent of the saplings he planted last year.
The Irish Christmas Tree Growers Association estimate that nationwide an average of one third of this year’s crop has been destroyed.
This week, Martin Lynskey, who runs a Christmas Tree Farm in Esker, Athenry, said he was still calculating his loss following the biggest drought in 40 years.
He hasn’t completed his assessment yet but is afraid that he may have lost up to half of the saplings he had planted – trees that would have come to maturity for the Christmas Tree market in about eight years’ time.
