Tuam woman makes history on the double

TUAM native Patricia Heffernan is woman who has made history twice this year.
In March, the self-confessed swimming addict braved close-to-freezing water and became the first deaf person to swim the Ice Mile at Wild Water in Armagh. At the end of September, Patricia was the first deaf person in Ireland to sit on a jury and deliberate on a verdict.
Sitting in the courtroom in Dublin, she wasn’t aware that her participation on the jury had been so monumental until the remarks were made by Judge Sinéad Ní Chúlacháin in the Criminal Courts in Dublin.
Patricia had been excused from jury service on two previous occasions but when she got the letter in August, she had no hesitation in filling in the form.
